Is the Era of "Young Wives of the Wealthy" Coming to an End?

·DW Arabic·2 min read

The image of an older, wealthy man married to a younger woman has long been a part of popular culture in the United States, appearing in movies and television shows. However, recent studies suggest that this phenomenon is beginning to fade. New data from the University of Minnesota’s Population Center shows that the age gap between spouses—especially among the wealthy—has become less pronounced than it was in previous decades.

In the past, large age gaps between spouses were a hallmark of wealthy men, with the difference between spouses sometimes reaching more than 20 years in second marriages. But current figures suggest that the age gap among the wealthy no longer differs much from the general average in society. In 1980, one in 12 men in the top 1% of earners was married to a woman at least ten years his junior. Now, these differences have all but disappeared.

On the other hand, high-income women do not appear to be gravitating toward younger partners. Data shows that only one in five high-income women chooses a partner younger than herself, a proportion similar to the rest of society. In contrast, larger age gaps have become more common among low-income individuals, with about 8% of men at the bottom of the income ladder marrying women ten years their junior or older.

Shifts in the age gap between spouses point to broader changes in social norms, as the age gap no longer reflects wealth as much as it is linked to factors such as education and social circles of similar age. People who spend more time in education tend to form relationships within social circles of similar age.

These changes point to deeper social shifts, which could influence traditional patterns of marriage and relationships in the future. As social and educational norms continue to evolve, we may see a future where traditional stereotypes of relationships between the wealthy and the young fade away, reflecting society’s evolution and shifting priorities.
