Germany: Who Doesn't Love Future Chancellor Cem Özdemir and Why?

In the German state of Baden-Württemberg, Cem Özdemir, the leading candidate of the Green Party, is expected to become the prime minister. The rise of a person of Turkish origin to this position is seen by many as a success story of Turks in Germany. However, criticisms against Özdemir are also prominent. Particularly among conservative and nationalist Turks, there seems to be a distance due to his stance and rhetoric.

Kenan Aslan, President of the Union of International Democrats (UID), acknowledges the symbolic value of Cem Özdemir, a politician of immigrant background, attaining a significant position. However, according to Aslan, the issue is not personal animosity but rather a matter of representation, belonging, and values. He points out that Özdemir's criticisms of the Turkish government have been negatively received among AKP voters in Germany, and that these critiques undermine the sense of belonging within the community.

Aslan states that Özdemir's politics do not align with the expectations of a society seeking representatives who do not criminalize their ties with Turkey and respect historical memory. He argues that Özdemir is a politician who gains visibility through the lens of Turkey's domestic politics and emphasizes that the community desires politicians who understand them and are not estranged from their roots.

Özdemir's role in the decision made in the Federal Parliament regarding the events of 1915 is another factor that has caused resentment among the Turkish community. Aslan expresses that the emphasis of this process by a person of Turkish origin has deepened the grievance. This situation creates a divisive effect on the diaspora and leads to increased criticism of Özdemir.

The rise of Cem Özdemir holds different meanings for the Turkish community in Germany. On one hand, the fact that a person of immigrant origin reaches such a significant position can be interpreted as a story of integration and success. On the other hand, some of Özdemir's political stances lead to divisions within the community. This situation stands as an important topic to be contemplated regarding how Turks in Germany define their various political views and sense of belonging.
